A Year In Miniatures 17: Mimics?
Nope, no mimics here, just a perfectly normal chest and barrel. Definitely nothing to worry about.
Mimics are a classic D&D Monster, and a fantastic way to make players deeply paranoid about perfectly normal objects. These figures are from the Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures range, and were an absolute blast to paint!
The official artwork for mimics, on which these minis are clearly based, has the purple of mimic flesh appearing only around the teeth and eyes. I wanted to do something a little different - implying that the natural purple colour emerges as soon as the mimic deviates from the stationary object it’s impersonating. Once again, I’m happy to have an airbrush with which to do nice smooth transitions, although I always seem to end up layering and glazing enough over them that it probably wouldn’t make a difference if I didn’t!
The most enjoyable part of painting these for me was highlighting the tongue ridges, although getting at the ones inside the mouth presented a bit of a challenge!
Happy Halloween everyone. Next time: another classic D&D Monster (or three, depending how you count)!
